Here at CayCan we really want to help you do well even after your audit is done. We’re happy to further support our internal audit clients. However, for services performed by Alberta Transportation there are some rules we have to follow. After we send in your audit, we have to get rid of any papers or records you gave us. Also, we can't offer you any advice or consulting services for a whole year.
In those cases, Alberta Transportation will be the ones to talk to you about your audit from now on. They'll send you messages through something called the TRAVIS Portal, which is how they talk to all carriers these days. If you have any questions about the audit after we've sent it in, we'll have to ask you to talk to Alberta Transportation for answers.
Audits Submitted to Alberta Transportation
Carriers with a Safety Fitness Certificate issued from Alberta Transportation can be subject to various types of Compliance Audits or Reviews. Here are the types of these services that we can perform:
Assessment of Regulatory Compliance (ARC)
Otherwise referred to as a National Safety Code Facility Audit. It’s the most comprehensive audit that is performed under the program.
New Carrier Compliance Review (NCCR)
An NCCR is a high level review of a carriers compliance. It must be submitted within 9 to 12 months after a Safety Fitness Certificate is first issued.
Assessment of Compliance
Alberta Transportation can request carriers complete an Assessment of Compliance which isn’t as detailed as a complete ARC Audit.
Verification
Alberta Transportation may request a carrier that has compliance issues identified in an ARC or NCCR to have a verification performed. In these cases, the ARC or NCCR is re-performed, however the scope is limited only to areas marked as non-compliant in the previous ARC/NCCR.
Assessment of Regulatory Compliance (ARC) Audit
Sometimes referred to as an National Safety Code (NSC) Facility Audit, Compliance Audit, Transportation Audit, or government audit. These are audits primarily required by Alberta Transportation as a condition added to a carriers Safety Fitness Certificate (SFC). Failure to have the audit completed by the deadline will cause the carriers SFC to be suspended. Any Commercial Vehicles caught operating while the certificate is suspended can face fines as well as having the vehicle(s) impounded. It’s very important to have the audit submitted before the deadline,
Note: Clients may choose to voluntarily complete an ARC Audit in an effort to improve their Safety Fitness Rating. However, they are liable to government action for any deficiencies identified. We recommend being absolutely sure that your company is prepared prior to booking this audit voluntarily.
Performing the Audit
When performing an ARC/NSC audit, CayCan Safety’s auditors work with carriers to ensure the audit does not disrupt daily business as much as possible. Expectations and required materials will be provided written confirmation letter. Generally, you will need to provide:
A working space for the auditor;
An electronic copy of a recent Carrier Profile (request online here); (dated within 30 days of the audit date)
The names, operator license numbers, license endorsements, date of hire and date of birth of all employees authorized to operate a commercial vehicle, including company mechanics and supervisors;
A copy of the letter you received from Alberta Transportation; and
A completed copy of the General Company Information Form (available on our website).
The auditor will also be examining:
Safety & maintenance manuals/procedures;
driver files;
training files;
accident and incident files;
transportation of dangerous goods documents;
equipment files;
hours of service records; and
insurance information.
How long an audit will take depends on document availability, and the number of units and drivers.
New Carrier Compliance Review (NCCR)
New Carriers in Alberta will require, within 9 to 12 months of being issued a new Safety Fitness Certificate, to undergo a new carrier compliance review. CayCan Safety Consulting is certified to complete this Review and submit it on your behalf to Alberta Transportation. These reviews are designed to have a minimal interruption to the carriers daily activities.

Internal Audits
Sometimes referred to as an Internal Audit, Mock Audit, or Informational NSC Audit. These audits are not required by Alberta Transportation and are not intended for submission. Instead, they are designed to provide carriers with a realistic and practical assessment of how the current operations align with National Safety Code (NSC) standards and regulatory expectations.
Internal audits are a valuable tool for identifying gaps, training needs, and process improvements—without the pressure or consequences of an audit submitted to Alberta Transportation. They are particularly helpful for new carriers, those preparing for a government audit, or companies simply looking to strengthen their safety programs and improve long-term compliance.
Performing the Internal Audit
When conducting an Internal Audit, CayCan Safety’s auditors follow a process that closely models a formal ARC/NSC audit to give clients the most accurate picture of their compliance status. A confirmation letter outlining expectations and required materials will be provided prior to the audit.
Our team works with you to minimize disruption to daily operations, performing the audit either on-site or remotely, to best fit the needs of the client. For remote audits, documents are shared securely over the internet, allowing our auditors to review your compliance without requiring a physical visit—ideal for operations in remote areas or with scheduling constraints.
Generally, you will need to provide:
A working space for the auditor if conducting the audit in person;
A recent Carrier Profile (dated within 30 days of the audit);
Basic driver and employee information (e.g., names, license numbers, date of hire, etc.);
The auditor will review:
Safety and maintenance policies;
Driver qualification and training files;
Hours of service records;
Incident and collision documentation;
Maintenance records and equipment files;
Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) compliance (if applicable);
Insurance and operating documents.
The length of the audit will vary depending on the size of the fleet, number of drivers, and availability of documentation. A summary of findings and recommendations will be provided following the audit, helping you prioritize any corrective actions or training initiatives.
Reviewing the Results
After the audit is complete, our auditor will take time to sit down with you—either in person or virtually—and go through the results in detail. This in-depth review ensures full understanding of the findings, the reasoning behind each observation, and what steps can be taken to address any deficiencies. We provide clear, practical guidance to help you implement meaningful improvements, and we’re happy to answer any questions along the way.
This collaborative approach transforms the audit from a compliance check into a learning opportunity—empowering your team to take ownership of safety and regulatory compliance.
Ongoing Support
Our partnership doesn’t end when the audit is complete. CayCan Safety offers ongoing support to help you maintain compliance and continually improve your safety program. Whether you need follow-up consultations, training sessions, assistance with implementing corrective actions, or updates on regulatory changes, our experts are here to guide you every step of the way.
This continuous support ensures your operations stay proactive, prepared, and aligned with evolving industry standards.
